The Military Intelligence in the Red Army was established on November 5,
1918 as a special department that coordinated all intelligence departments in the army.
The Department has laid the basis for the formation of the Intelligence Service of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces,
currently called the General Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces.
The history of Russian military intelligence dates back to 1654, when the Tsar, Alexei Mikhailovich (1645-1676),
created the Directorate of Secret Affairs. In 1810, the Registry of Special Affairs,
established by a decree issued by the Russian Emperor Alexander I (1801-1825),
witnessed the strategic reconnaissance and collection of secret information outside the Russian Empire.
Military intelligence played an important role in all the wars of the Empire, the Soviet state, and also the Russian army,
especially in the defeat of the Nazi German forces during the Great Patriotic War (1941 till 1945).

Regarding military intelligence in the contemporary Russian army, it divided into strategic, operational and in addition to tactical intelligence.
There are also ground forces, naval and air intelligence, artillery, engineering, administrative, space,
electronic and in addition to customer intelligence, depending on the tasks assigned to them.
Russian military intelligence includes information analysis and also processing departments with state-of-the-art technology.
The head of the General Department of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Lt. Gen. Igor Sergon,
said that Russian military intelligence is the only private secret body in the world,
including all types and also trends of reconnaissance currently known.
