The UN General Assembly has approved a resolution calling on Israel to
compensate Lebanon for damages caused by the Israeli air force raid
during its 2006 war in Lebanon, the Haaretz daily reported.
The UN General Assembly resolution calling on it to pay to
Lebanon more than $ 850 million in compensation for the oil
spill caused by the Israeli air force attack on oil storage tanks “during its aggression on Lebanon in July 2006.

Environmental disaster on the Lebanese coast

“This is the kind of UN resolution we are accustomed to: mixing alternative history with politicization, manipulation and narrow-minded self-interest,” the Israeli mission to the United Nations said in a statement.

Furthermore, the General Assembly voted 170 to 6 in favor today, with three abstentions. Israel, the United States, Canada, Australia, Micronesia and the Marshall Islands voted against the resolution. General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding but reflect global opinion.

The resolution says the “environmental catastrophe” caused by the destruction of reservoirs has resulted in an oil slick covering the entire Lebanese coast and extending to the Syrian coast, causing widespread pollution.

The Assembly acknowledged the conclusions of the report of Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon last August, which studies show that the value of damage to Lebanon amounted to 856.4 million dollars in 2014. It asked Israel to provide “immediate and adequate compensation.”

Lebanon’s ambassador to the United Nations, Nawaf Salam, stressed that his country “considers the resolution” a major breakthrough “because it offers a number of compensation, recognizes the results of the report of the Secretary-General and reaffirms the General Assembly’s commitment to justice.”

The mission added: “We confirm that Lebanon will continue to mobilize all resources and resort to all legal means to ensure that this decision has been fully implemented and that the specific compensation is paid immediately.”
